It is simply towards the finish it starts to break down, although slap-upwards finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it has zero high problem within the way of life down its very unsightly label.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The movie moves within a fast pace, the dialogue is advanced and you may characterisations essentially active. Knob Powell and Evelyn Keyes lead the brand new cast expertly, because the investigator are enjoyed significant aplomb by that person identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]

Richard Brody regarding The latest Yorker noted “Which terse and taut flick noir is actually predicated on the newest personal and you can professional disputes of title profile, the latest criminal genius (starred by the Cock Powell) at the rear of a sophisticated illegal local casino. The fresh film’s author and you can director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess online game, to have mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) has worked at casino and you can old an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic script, new cast’s suavely managed body language off like and you may menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will smartly cocky images (and additionally their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle a hidden antique of one’s category.” [ 10 ]

Photograph possess motion and you may suspense, and you may certain small satisfies away from laughs to include taste. Adept activities by Knob Powell, while the a gaming domestic overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, as the an authorities inspector, as well as in the score . Whilst the area employs a familiar development, the latest characterizations was new and also the shows adequate in order to overbalance. Dialogue are terse and relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney reach. Strange cam angles come-along once in a while to heighten attract and briefly arrest the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling as the movie director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, unique journalist and you can associate producer, also aids in rendering it a delicate development.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily a question of enjoying Mr. Powell go through his paces smartly while a big shed out-of actors and stars bring him vintage service. Evelyn Keyes plays the good little lady which brings forth this new best in him and Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and you may slinky vixen whom will get your on jams. Thomas Gomez was fatty just like the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a special able journey given that a weary police inspector whom finally shuts the way it is. A great deal of ingesting and you can puffing is carried out by every concerned.” [ several ]
